Overview
The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, will be held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26, 2025. This festival takes place every 12 years and attracts millions of pilgrims who come to bathe at the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, believing it purifies sins and leads to spiritual liberation. Key bathing dates include Paush Purnima (January 13), Makar Sankranti (January 14), Mauni Amavasya (January 29), Basant Panchami (February 2) and Maha Shivratri (February 26). The event also features the Shahi Snans, royal processions by sadhus and religious orders. The origins of the Kumbh Mela lie in the mythological churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), where drops of the nectar of immortality fell at four sites, including Prayagraj.
